Used CNC Boring Mills for Sale | Southeast Inventory

Shops across the Southeast that machine large, heavy parts often reach a point where a standard machining center runs out of travel, table capacity, or reach. A used CNC horizontal boring mill can be a practical fit for heavy fabrication, energy, mining, and large structural work when the purchase is grounded in spindle size, travels, table load, rotary and B-axis setup, way condition, and control — not just a model name on a listing.

Table type or floor type

Start with the biggest, heaviest part you plan to run. Table-type boring mills move the workpiece on a saddle and table, often with a rotary table, which suits parts that need machining on several faces in one setup. Floor-type machines keep the workpiece on a fixed floor plate while the column travels, which suits very long or very heavy work that would overload a table. Match the machine style to your parts and floor space before comparing listings.

What to check on a used CNC boring mill

  • Spindle diameter and quill stroke: Confirm the spindle diameter, quill (W-axis) stroke, and taper against the bore depths and tooling you run.
  • X, Y, and Z travels: Check column, headstock, and table or saddle travels against your largest parts, including tool length and fixtures.
  • Table size and load capacity: Match the table dimensions and rated load to your heaviest workpiece plus fixturing. Check T-slots and the table surface for damage.
  • Rotary table and B-axis: Confirm whether the rotary table is full CNC B-axis or indexing only, and check indexing accuracy and clamping.
  • Way condition and lubrication: Inspect boxways or linear guides for scoring, wear patterns, and damaged way wipers. Confirm the way lube system works and that oil reaches each axis.
  • Ballscrews and backlash: Ask for recent backlash or positioning checks on each axis. Run each axis and watch for rough motion or noise.
  • CNC control: Identify the control, software version, and options. Confirm program transfer works and whether your programmers know that platform.
  • Spindle runout check: Have an indicator run on the spindle and quill, extended and retracted. Listen for bearing noise through the speed range.
  • Heads, attachments, and tooling: Note which right-angle heads, facing heads, tool changer, and holders are included with the sale.
  • Hours and maintenance records: Where the control stores power-on or spindle hours, capture those numbers. Compare them to the condition of the ways, screws, and spindle, not to the year alone.

Evaluate every used machine on its actual configuration and condition. We do not publish unverified serial numbers or assume that every pictured option is included. Ask for the current details, photos, and operating information before arranging a visit or freight.

Inspect it under power

Whenever possible, see the machine run before it ships. Power it up, home every axis, run the spindle through its speed range, index the rotary table, and cut or bore a test piece if the setup allows it. Check for leaks and confirm the tool changer and heads work as described.

Rigging, foundation, and power planning

Boring mills are among the heaviest machines in most shops, so plan the move early. Confirm the machine weight and footprint, door and crane-way clearances, and whether you will need specialized riggers, heavy-haul freight, or a crane. Many boring mills need a dedicated concrete foundation to hold alignment, so ask about foundation drawings and anchoring before the machine arrives. Check voltage, phase, amperage, and air supply, and allow time for leveling and alignment after installation.
