Used CNC Horizontal Machining Centers for Sale | Southeast Inventory

Shops across the Southeast that run repeat production on prismatic parts often outgrow a vertical machining center once setups, part flips, and operator time start eating the margin. A used CNC horizontal machining center can be a practical step up for castings, manifolds, housings, and other multi-face work when the purchase is grounded in pallet size and count, spindle, tool capacity, B-axis setup, way condition, and control, not just a model name on a listing.

When an HMC makes sense

Start with the parts. A horizontal spindle and a pallet changer let you load the next part while the current one cuts, and a rotary B-axis reaches several faces in one setup. Chips fall away from the work instead of piling up on it. If your work is mostly flat plates or one-face parts in short runs, a vertical machining center may still be the better buy. If you are flipping parts two or three times and waiting on setups, an HMC is worth a hard look.

What to check on a used CNC horizontal machining center

  • Pallet size and pallet count: Confirm pallet dimensions, the number of pallets, and the rated load per pallet against your largest part plus tombstone or fixture.
  • Work envelope and travels: Check X, Y, and Z travels and the maximum swing diameter on the pallet, including tool length and fixture height.
  • B-axis configuration: Find out whether the table is full contouring B-axis or indexing only, and at what increment. Check indexing repeatability and pallet clamping.
  • Spindle taper, speed, and hours: Confirm taper (40 or 50), max RPM, and power. Run the spindle through its range and listen for bearing noise. Capture spindle hours where the control stores them.
  • Tool changer and magazine: Count tool pockets, cycle the changer several times, and confirm the tool-holder style and pull studs match what your shop already runs.
  • Pallet changer operation: Cycle the automatic pallet changer under power and watch for hesitation, misalignment, or air and hydraulic leaks.
  • Way condition and lubrication: Inspect boxways or linear guides and the way covers for damage. Confirm the way lube system works on each axis.
  • Ballscrews and backlash: Ask for recent backlash or positioning checks on each axis, and run each axis looking for rough motion or noise.
  • Coolant and chip handling: Check the chip conveyor, coolant tank, filtration, and any through-spindle coolant pump. Production HMCs make a lot of chips, so this matters.
  • CNC control and options: Identify the control, software version, and options such as probing, tool-breakage detection, and high-speed machining. Confirm program transfer works.

Evaluate every used machine on its actual configuration and condition. We do not publish unverified serial numbers or assume that every pictured option is included. Ask for the current details, photos, and operating information before arranging a visit or freight.

Inspect it under power

Whenever possible, see the machine run before it ships. Power it up, home every axis, run the spindle through its speed range, index the B-axis, cycle the tool changer and the pallet changer, and cut a test part if the setup allows it. Check for leaks and confirm alarms are clear.

Rigging, foundation, and power planning

HMCs are heavier and taller than most VMCs, and larger pallet machines can need a crane or specialized riggers. Confirm machine weight and footprint, door and ceiling clearances, and whether the pallet pool or chip conveyor ships separately. Check the floor and any foundation requirement, plus voltage, phase, amperage, and air supply, and allow time for leveling after installation.
