Used CNC Grinders for Sale | Southeast Inventory

Shops across the Southeast that hold tight tolerances on hardened parts eventually run into work a mill or lathe cannot finish. A used CNC grinder can be the right answer for die and mold components, shafts, pins, bushings, bearing races, and tooling, as long as the purchase is grounded in grinder type, capacity, spindle and wheelhead condition, way condition, and control, not just a model name on a listing.

Pick the right type of grinder first

Start with the parts. A surface grinder handles flat work such as plates, die sets, and gauge blocks. A cylindrical OD/ID grinder finishes round work between centers or in a chuck. A centerless grinder runs high volumes of round parts without centers. A tool and cutter grinder sharpens and makes cutting tools. Buying the wrong type is the most expensive mistake on a used grinder, so match the machine to the part mix you actually run.

What to check on a used CNC grinder

  • Capacity: For surface grinders, confirm table size, longitudinal and cross travel, and height under the wheel. For cylindrical grinders, confirm swing and distance between centers. For centerless, confirm the diameter range and wheel width against your parts.
  • Wheel size and wheelhead: Check wheel diameter, width, and bore, wheelhead motor power, and whether the wheelhead swivels or has an ID attachment.
  • Spindle condition: Run the wheel spindle up to speed and listen for bearing noise. Ask about spindle rebuild history and check for vibration marks on recently ground parts.
  • Way condition and lubrication: Inspect the table ways and cross slide for scoring or wear, and confirm the way lube system feeds every axis.
  • Hydraulics: Many grinders drive the table hydraulically. Watch for smooth, even reversals, and check for leaks, noisy pumps, and overheating.
  • Dressing system: Confirm how the wheel is dressed (table-mounted, overhead, or CNC profile dressing) and that the dresser works under the control.
  • Workholding: On surface grinders, check the magnetic chuck for flatness and holding power. On cylindrical grinders, check the headstock, tailstock, centers, and any chucks or steady rests that come with the machine.
  • Coolant and filtration: Grinding finish depends on clean coolant. Check the tank, filtration (paper bed, magnetic separator, or similar), and pump.
  • CNC control and options: Identify the control, software version, and options such as in-process gauging, automatic wheel balancing, and conversational grinding cycles. Confirm program transfer works.

Evaluate every used machine on its actual configuration and condition. We do not publish unverified serial numbers or assume that every pictured option is included. Ask for the current details, photos, and operating information before arranging a visit or freight.

Inspect it under power

Whenever possible, see the grinder run before it ships. Power it up, home every axis, run the wheel spindle through its speed range, dress the wheel, traverse the table end to end, and grind a test part if the setup allows it. Check the finish and size on the test part, look for leaks, and confirm alarms are clear.

Rigging, foundation, and power planning

Precision grinders need a solid, level floor, and some larger cylindrical and centerless machines call for a foundation. Confirm machine weight and footprint, door clearances, and whether the coolant system or hydraulic unit ships separately. Check voltage, phase, amperage, and air supply, and allow time for leveling and warm-up after installation before you hold tight tolerances.
